I’ve been digging through old footage lately, and today (in honor of Throwback Thursday) I just posted a live performance of “Talk About Love.” It starts with the minute-long instrumental intro “Clouds & Fire Part 1” and comes from a 2008 show. Check it out and leave some nice comments on YouTube to let me know you saw it!

The band features some of my favorite people: Chris Cooke, Jesse Shuster, Clay Krasner, Gary Ishee, Jon Bonine, Mindy Wade and Desirae Bronson.

I was at a restaurant picking up dinner and the hostess recognized me.

She said, “you’re that guy who sings and tries to tell jokes!”

Hmmm. What can you say to that?

It’s really that one word “tries” that kind of ruined the moment for me . . .

Deep Roots - Cover - CD BabyI’ve known most of these songs as long as I can remember.

I recall exactly one sermon that I heard as a child – Pastor Bill dressed up in a cardboard suit of armor and talked about Ephesians 6 – but I could probably rattle off the lyrics to dozens of hymns with little effort. I’m sure I picked up more theology from these songs than from anywhere else in my early life.

But it wasn’t just nostalgia that prompted me to record this collection.

There were moments in the studio while I was singing when the weight of these words struck me with such force that I had to stop singing and regain my composure. What was it that moved me?

It was truth. Beautifully and honestly expressed in song.

Thank you for letting me share this collection of hymns with you. Whether these songs are familiar or brand new to you, I pray they will be an encouragement.

Deep Roots is available at this website, iTunes and Amazon.

Screen Shot 2013-12-22 at 11.06.25 PMWhile visiting my folks over Thanksgiving, we all went to a Christmas Variety show at a local theater. Singing, dancing, drama, humor – it was a great production and a lot of fun.

Near the end they did a Nativity segment with Mary and Joseph, baby Jesus and the usual assortment of angels and shepherds, and a narrator explained that the reason Jesus came was to show us that our world would be a little better if we would just be nice to each other.

I’ll admit that there’s plenty of scripture supporting the idea that we should be nice (“love one another” is a phrase that springs to mind), but I think we’re missing the Whole Point of Christmas if we think that Jesus came to spread moralism.

The Bible (our only source of information on the subject) reveals that Jesus came because A) mankind is in grave danger and B) we need a Savior. Not a moral policeman. A Savior.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:21-23)

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

“…the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.(Matthew 20:28)

This time of year we’re constantly reminded to not miss the deeper meaning of Christmas. But we’re missing it if we think it’s anything other than this: I am a broken human being who cannot save himself from his own brokenness. Jesus “emptied Himself” and became a man (see Philippians 2) and lived and died performing a rescue operation.

There it is.

Like it or not, holiday music is everywhere right now.  From “Silent Night” to “The Chipmunk Song”- it’s on TV, the grocery store, your chiropractor’s office – everywhere.

As a kid, I remember pulling out my parents’ vinyl records, stacking ’em up and dropping the needle to listen to a wide variety of Christmas tunes. A standout was always an LP from 1961 called “Holiday Sing Along With Mitch Miller and the Gang.”

It’s a glorious collision of accordion, gang vocals and cheeeesiest of arrangements which all contribute to perhaps the guiltiest pleasure in a season of guilty pleasures.

So what’s your holiday music “guilty pleasure?” Surely I can’t be the only one who tosses good musical taste out the window to revel in Holiday cheese. Comments below, please!
