Panel-AngelsOnlyI almost didn’t record “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.” Let’s face it: this carol has been done to death – and worse, my arrangement seemed a little silly. So I considered dropping it from my song list.

And then, a memory; when I was a kid, for some reason the line “pleased as man with men to dwell” had always made me think of the phrase “pleased as punch.” And suddenly, I decided that my goofy version of “Hark” was actually okay. I realize that there’s no logic to this; I just felt, intuitively, that it worked. And now, it’s one of my favorite tracks on the record. Funny how that works . . .

“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” (Colossians 1:19-20)

Not frivolous subject matter, to be sure. Listen for yourself below – and let me know what you think!

My Deep Roots record is – strictly speaking – a hymns project. So while “How Deep The Father’s Love” was only written 20 years ago, I knew it would fit in beautifully with a set of older, classic songs of the Christian faith.

In the studio, we went with a pretty simple arrangement that slowly rose to a dramatic conclusion; “His wounds have paid my ransom” – a lyric that answers the question asked by the title. Rachael Lampa provided some beautiful, heart-felt harmonies, and it quickly became one of my favorite tracks on the record.

What are some other modern worship songs that you feel could stand alongside great hymns of the faith? Comment below, y’all.

IMG_1265I’ve got a few boxes full of old vinyl records that I finally decided to get rid of. I’ve been hauling them around for years from California to Idaho to Tennessee and finally back to Idaho, where they’ve been occupying a spot in the back of my closet.

Have you ever tried to sell something on eBay? Or even just a yard sale? Then you know it can be hard to determine what price to assign to the thing you’re selling. How much is it worth?

If you’ve ever watched Antiques Roadshow or Pawn Stars or Storage Wars, you know that, while it might seem like your cherished item is worth something, in reality, value is determined by how much someone is willing to pay. It might turn out to be worth a lot – but it’s also possible that nobody’s looking for it and you can’t even give it away!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5 ESV)

Paul here describes us as “dead in our trespasses.” In the “FREE” box in the waning hours of a yard sale. Our worth? Negligible. No buyers. Destined for the trash bin.

But even when we were without apparent value, we were not unloved. In fact, Jesus paid the highest price for you and for me. While we were still sinners and enemies with God, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8-10). We were “bought with a price” (2 Corinthians 6:20 and 7:23) – not with “mere gold or silver,” but with “the precious blood of Christ” (I Peter 1:18-19).

If value is determined by how much someone’s willing to pay . . . well, there you go.

Your worth is never in question. You are precious and loved by God.

Check out my song “All I Know of Love”  below:

To be with me, there was no line You wouldn’t cross
To be with me, You gave Your life upon a wooden cross
And this is all I know of love

I’m on Facebook – which can sometimes be fun, is often aggravating, but is usually (let’s be honest) just a colossal waste of time.

Sometimes, though, I’ll see something really worthwhile in my newsfeed – like the other day when my buddy Chris posted this gem:
Screen Shot 2015-08-01 at 3.00.43 PM

Think about that for a minute. If you had a car that would only go forward, you’d give serious consideration to how you drive – and especially how you park. If you can’t put the car in reverse, you’d weigh all of your driving choices very carefully.

I’ve got news for you: you are driving a life that doesn’t go into reverse. It progresses relentlessly forward, never allowing you to “undo” a poor decision or take a mulligan.

This is a problem that every religion attempts to solve.

  • I’ve done bad things.
  • I can’t put it in reverse.
  • So . . . how do I fix this?

Jesus is the answer that Christianity offers. Because of the cross, God says “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” (Hebrews 10:17)

We have a Savior Who offers forgiveness. Who offers us a “do-over.” Who chooses to forget our shameful past.

Although we can’t shift our lives into reverse, now we can go forward with a clean slate.

alliknowcoversmallI wrote the song “Heal Me” with my good friends and songwriting partners Ben Bauman and Randy Thomas. When I was putting out my first solo project, an industry insider advised me to not include the song on my CD; he believed it was too “dark” and that nobody wanted to hear a song that admitted such brokenness.

But I believed in the message of “Heal Me” so I chose to record it anyway. I’m glad I did, because (much to my surprise and gratitude) I’ve seen God use it to encourage a lot of people.

For example, I once met a lady who believed God used the song to save her life. After losing her husband to cancer, she had been deeply depressed and was going to kill herself.  While pacing her house trying to decide what method to use, for some reason she put my CD on. She heard the opening lines of “Heal Me” (“this is the way that You find me / broken in pieces on my knees”) and sat down in front of her stereo. For hours she just kept hitting “repeat.” Listening to “Heal Me” over and over that day, she found the courage to get help. Eventually, she became a counselor helping hurting people just like herself.

We all know shame and brokenness – and none of us will get through life without becoming acquainted with loss and grief. Thank God for our Savior and healer, Jesus.

I’ve had a nice long break from shows (and blogging and basically everything that has to do with being a “working artist”) . . . but it’s time to get the ball rolling again!

Back-2-work-imageI’m an independent artist, and the days are long past when I had management and a booking agent and publicity people, so I do it all. Not all of this is exactly enjoyable, but I only get to do the stuff I love (songwriting, recording records, touring) if I do the work of booking shows, etc.

So I’m looking out over 2015 and thinking about where to start. Got any suggestions? I would love to hear them!

I definitely plan to have some full-band shows and some smaller, acoustic gigs. There will also be a Christmas tour later in the year.

So what do y’all think? Want me to come to your town?

2014-11-02 20.40.57Julie: “Can you pick up some cream cheese for my Alfredo sauce recipe?”

Me: “Sure. Need anything else?”

Julie: “Well . . . we could use some salad veggies. And fruit. Maybe ice cream?”

Me: “Okay, I’d better make a note.”

(. . . 30 minutes later . . .)

Me: “Honey, I’m home.”

Julie: “Where’s the cream cheese?”

Me: “Uhhhhhh . . . I didn’t write that down.”

And that’s why I always write everything down.
