WHY I RECORDED DEEP ROOTS

Deep Roots - Cover - CD BabyI’ve known most of these songs as long as I can remember.

I recall exactly one sermon that I heard as a child – Pastor Bill dressed up in a cardboard suit of armor and talked about Ephesians 6 – but I could probably rattle off the lyrics to dozens of hymns with little effort. I’m sure I picked up more theology from these songs than from anywhere else in my early life.

But it wasn’t just nostalgia that prompted me to record this collection.

There were moments in the studio while I was singing when the weight of these words struck me with such force that I had to stop singing and regain my composure. What was it that moved me?

It was truth. Beautifully and honestly expressed in song.

Thank you for letting me share this collection of hymns with you. Whether these songs are familiar or brand new to you, I pray they will be an encouragement.

Scott

THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS IS … WAIT, WHAT?

Screen Shot 2013-12-22 at 11.06.25 PMWhile visiting my folks over Thanksgiving, we all went to a Christmas Variety show at a local theater. Singing, dancing, drama, humor – it was a great production and a lot of fun.

Near the end they did a Nativity segment with Mary and Joseph, baby Jesus and the usual assortment of angels and shepherds, and a narrator explained that the reason Jesus came was to show us that our world would be a little better if we would just be nice to each other.

I’ll admit that there’s plenty of scripture supporting the idea that we should be nice (“love one another” is a phrase that springs to mind), but I think we’re missing the Whole Point of Christmas if we think that Jesus came to spread moralism.

The Bible (our only source of information on the subject) reveals that Jesus came because A) mankind is in grave danger and B) we need a Savior. Not a moral policeman. A Savior.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:21-23)

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

“…the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.(Matthew 20:28)

This time of year we’re constantly reminded to not miss the deeper meaning of Christmas. But we’re missing it if we think it’s anything other than this: I am a broken human being who cannot save himself from his own brokenness. Jesus “emptied Himself” and became a man (see Philippians 2) and lived and died performing a rescue operation.

There it is.

BRING ON THE HOLIDAY CHEESE!

mitch-miller

Like it or not, holiday music is everywhere right now.  From “Silent Night” to “The Chipmunk Song”- it’s on TV, the grocery store, your chiropractor’s office – everywhere.

As a kid, I remember pulling out my parents’ vinyl records, stacking ’em up and dropping the needle to listen to a wide variety of Christmas tunes. A standout was always an LP from 1961 called “Holiday Sing Along With Mitch Miller and the Gang.”

It’s a glorious collision of accordion, gang vocals and cheeeesiest of arrangements which all contribute to perhaps the guiltiest pleasure in a season of guilty pleasures.

So what’s your holiday music “guilty pleasure?” Surely I can’t be the only one who tosses good musical taste out the window to revel in Holiday cheese. Comments below, please!

DEEP ROOTS SNEAK PEEK!

If you’re one of my wonderful Kickstarter Backers, you should have an exclusive download link (for the new CD) in your inbox by now. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until December 10th.

Except … I can’t wait that long to share at least something from “Deep Roots.” So here’s a sneak peek at my cover of the Grammy and Dove award winning song “10,000 Reasons.” And yes, I’m aware that it’s not strictly a hymn … but I like it and decided to put it on the hymn CD (and it is my CD, after all, so I get to choose what’s on it). Anyway, take a listen and please let me know what you think!

PUPPIES, TOADS AND LEARNING THE HARD WAY

2010-6-28 BlackberryMy son’s black lab, Blackberry, recently had 11 puppies.

I remember when she was a puppy herself, and Josiah was teaching her to do things like fetch and sit. At that age, there was always something new to learn.

One night, Blackberry tried to eat a toad, but it turns out that toads secrete something that makes the puppy’s mouth foam up and then makes the puppy puke.

As defense mechanisms go, this one is flawed, since the toad is dead … but lesson learned, right? Don’t eat toads. So naturally, Blackberry found another toad and repeated the whole thing just a few minutes later.

I have to admit that sometimes I have the same problem. I’ll make stupid choices and then have to deal with consequences – but then turn right around and do it all again, as if I’ve already forgotten. This isn’t just me, I know. It’s such a part of the human condition that even the Apostle Paul admitted to it:

Romans 7:21-25a NIV
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

What’s really interesting to me about what Paul says is, well, what he doesn’t say. Wouldn’t you expect Paul (an Apostle, remember) to say “so here’s how I licked that sin problem that I used to have.” That’s how our sermons and hymns and Christian hit songs have usually dealt with this touchy subject. We’ve all sinned (past tense) but “now I am happy all the day.”

But no. Paul actually admits his own struggle with sin is ongoing (whoa!) and further admits his own helplessness to fix that problem. He’s not saying that we should just give up and have a sin free-for-all (he’s already addressed that in Romans 6). Just a couple of verses later, he tells us “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 NIV).

Yet again, I’m reminded of how much I need Jesus.
