THE ROTTEN SHEPHERD…

I don’t really know a lot about sheep. We have a few of them at my house, but I’m not particularly attached to them myself. Mostly they kind of bug me because they’re pretty stupid and they sometimes get through the fence and you have to figure out where they’re getting out …

So it would be fair to say that I wouldn’t be a very good shepherd.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. When Jesus said that, He meant business. He cares so much for us – His “sheep” – that he went to His death to save each of us.

I can promise you that I wouldn’t die for the sheep at my house. I wouldn’t be a “good shepherd” – I’d be a rotten one.

But would I die for my kids? My wife? Yes. Without hesitation. Because I love them and care more for their well being than for my own.

I wonder if we realize how much our Savior – our Shepherd – loves us?

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

I am with you on the sheep thing. I had to do 4-H and hated my sheep project. Horses were much more fun. I love what you’re saying here about how Christ cares about us like a shepherd.

    I LOOOVE sheep!

(especially in this nice red wine sauce I make…)
