sad guyIn addition to my songwriting/recording career, I’m a worship pastor, and each week I pray through dozens of requests that come in to the church.

Sometimes I’m just floored by what a truly broken world we live in. I read about heartache and loss, struggle and pain. Job stress and illness. Relationships in deep trouble. Loneliness. Doubt. Fear. All of this from people that I care about, people I serve each week.

When life gets hard, it can be a struggle to trust God, to continue to believe He’s with us and that He loves us. And the truth is, sometimes what we know and what we feel are completely at odds.

So allow me to share some encouragement from Jesus. But first, a warning: this is not the stuff of Hallmark cards; Jesus has never been the type to pretend that life will be easy.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (Jesus, John 16:33)

If you’re familiar with His story, you understand that Jesus knows something about “having trouble” in this world… And through His death on the cross and his resurrection He has “overcome the world.”

It’s true that creation has been vandalized by sin and is irreparably broken. But take courage: Jesus – who knows all about heartache and trouble – has overcome the world.

REMEMBER CD cover - not final

While we’re on the subject of trusting God when things are unclear, here’s my song “Stars In The Day Sky”.

Click on the image to listen and read below for the lyrics… And click HERE to download from iTunes

I can’t see the stars in the day sky
But even if they are far away, I know they are there
I know they are there
And the stars are revealed
Only when the darkness falls

So I will trust You, I will trust You
I will trust You with my life

I will be still and know that You are God
I will be still and know that You are God

I can’t see the stars in the day sky
But I know they’re there – I know they are there…

Great word, Scott! Thank you for the reminder. He has “overcome the world.” Brings a certain level of peace just to hear those words.

  2. Herschel Riggan says:

Great song, Scott. Really touched me. Like most people I have experienced times when I wondered where God is when I need him. I found out you just need to hang on, waiting on God. He will alwlays show up. I will trust you is my theme. Thanks for the reminder.

“Vandalized by sin” is a perfect way to describe our fallen world. Great post.

Thank you Scott. It brought me to tears, necessary tears. We believe the stars are still there, they come out when it is dark. We must trust that God is there, and we often only turn to him when times are dark. Things have been dark for many people and communities lately, but I know that many have turned to Him that wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the dark. His goal is for all of us to turn to Him. He is at work in all of us and for all of us. Again Scott, thank you.
